This is the best summary I could come up with:

A 52-year-old Chinese man, who chain-smoked cigarettes while completing a marathon, has been issued banned for two years.

The man, identified by his surname Chen, completed the C&D Xiamen Marathon 2024, held on 7 January in three hours and 33 minutes, and smoked throughout.

Now, the Xiamen Marathon’s organising committee has issued a two-year ban on him from their races and reported him to the Chinese Athletics Association for further penalties.

He is popularly known as Uncle Chen and has earned the title of “Smoking Brother” in China, according to Canadian Running magazine, which first reported the incident.

The list also includes “open defecation, littering, trampling on the flowers and grass and other behaviours that might affect other runners”.

Last year, the Chinese Athletics Association introduced a proposal aimed at encouraging healthier participation and reducing smoking during road-running events.

How the hell can you be a chain smoker and run a marathon?!

Fortunately, he was not guilty of that. The article was just listing more rules from the rulebook.

There’s like a whole thing with marathon and ultramarathon runners just shitting themselves while running. There’s something physiological that happens when you push the body that much. So I’m not so surprised that “pit stops” in the bushes were an issue that required a ruling.

Im salty about the smoking guy though: Justice for Chain-Smoking Chen! China has the world’s only living train and they treat him like this!

givesomefucks@lemmy.world on 25 Jan 2024 17:15 next collapse

Every once and a while you hear about a “serial pooper” in the news…

Some idiot that runs a lot everyday, and just starts shitting in random people’s yards then running away.

And everytime they’re caught, they always act like they don’t understand why everyone is mad.

They’re so wrapped up in competitive running, they assume shitting in someone’s front yard is totally cool.

Someone just got caught on video doing it at the last Boston Marathon

runnersworld.com/…/boston-runner-takes-a-pit-stop…

But my city had some lady who was doing it everyday recently. She ran a new route everyday and would just drop deuces anywhere in broad daylight then sprint away, so it was hard to catch her… I think they may have done DNA analysis on her droppings, because of course she wasn’t bagging up either.

I knew a guy in the army who would smoke a cigarette right before and directly after his 2 mile PT test run. Dude would run it in under 12 minutes. Some people are just built differently than us normal humans.

Cinner@lemmy.world on 25 Jan 2024 17:17 next collapse

Nicotine is a potent stimulant. If you don’t smoke all the time and get tarred lungs then I could see why that would be very bit official. like running a marathon on Adderall to a lesser degree

DigitalTraveler42@lemmy.world on 26 Jan 2024 00:53 collapse

Had a whole gang of dudes like this in the Marines too, you said they’re just built different, I say they’re just nicotine addicts.

It’s China…

Smoking a filtered cigarette might be better air quality than just breathing the air…

Something about the professional, detached tone combined with the absolute slapstick insanity of the article’s content makes this perfect comedy

Maybe but the guy was wrecked pretty much afterward and barely even finished. Could hardly walk for part of it.

I see, that’s too much then. I mean it’s primarily a poison but I think it’s from the same family as nicotine, interestingly enough.

Just like the good old days when athletes would smoke during breaks in the game. They sure were great times!

rimu@piefed.social on 25 Jan 2024 22:08 next collapse

IMO any chain-smoker who attempts a marathon should be given a head start. Like a golf handicap.

Coreidan@lemmy.world on 26 Jan 2024 05:21 next collapse

Good?

Seriously chain smoking in public is just a dick move.

Doing so during a marathon of all places is even more of a dick move.

Banning a person like this is the right move.

Akasazh@feddit.nl on 26 Jan 2024 10:24 collapse

As a former smoker I can’t imagine doing it whilst running. Either he takes only light drags or is superficially smoking. Really inhaling fully during running would be very unpleasant.
