People should look for safer, legal, substances, like… checks notes… alcohol.

The duality of criteria regarding “traditional” drugs depending on whether they are produced by rich countries or not is pathetic.

The situation with cocaine is really fucked though. I think what could be a solution is to allow the sale and trade of coca leaves, but not the extracted substance.

Alcohol has serious issues as well and regulations are too lax. But cocaine, as opposed to cannabis and the popular psychedelics, has serious health risks regardless of your own preconditions.

Anyhow, prohibition has never worked anyways, so there’s that.

Coca leaf is not bad for you as such. It’s fairly mild when it’s not purified into the active ingredient.

It’s about personal freedom, and respect for cultures. The WHO is a bullshit organization that should get the kaibosh for a great many reasons. They exist to exploit low wage workers in foreign dictatorships and regimes, they exist to in effect enslave the populations of poor foreign countries, and in the process sell out high labor standards in the developed world.

Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works on 10 Feb 20:46 collapse

I think that makes a lot of sense. If people try to make cocaine in their own country they would need ridiculous amounts of leaf matter to make anything beyond personal use.

Might be kind of bad for the environment though if that starts to happen at scale. Much less CO2 to ship a Kilo of something than like 500 Kilo of something.

Checks notes approved drugs that have been tested for safety and efficacy rather than “traditional medicine”.

Who is the WHO to tell people what plants they can use? Everyone should pull out of the WHO, it’s an abomination of an organization in the first place, made by the US to help exploit people in countries with lower standards of living, and pollute their air and water.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz on 10 Feb 20:04 collapse

That’s an interesting claim and the first time I’m hearing it. Do you might citing specific examples?

hector@lemmy.today on 10 Feb 20:14 collapse

I was thinking of the World Trade Organization for enslaving poor people in dictatorships. The World Health Organization is also a shit organization, not in that way though, but these us created international oganizations work in tandem to police sovereign countries out of their rights. This is not the first plant the WHO has illegalized, or tried to illegalize. Kratom has been targeted, unsuccessfully, under dishonest arguments put forward by the US that failed to schedule it here with those arguments for instance.
