When European Commission and Council Presidents Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa arrive in Kyiv for a day of remembrance on Tuesday, they will have little to offer other than condolences.

Four years to the day since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, the EU hoped to bring some comfort in the form of fresh sanctions against Moscow and a €90 billion loan to Kyiv.

Hungary has stopped that happening.

If they elect Orban again, either EU reforms veto’s or it need to kick hungary out. We can’t have a bad actor that keeps sabotaging the union over and over again

A single nation veto isn’t necessarily a bad idea but I agree they should’ve been booted long ago for undemocratic policies and clear corruption from outside nations.

For me it’s been clear for a long time that different levels of integration are necessary.

  • countries that simply exist in the single market. no common budget, no money from the EU. single country veto on rules like mandatory USB-C or GDPR

  • countries with common budget: deciding on long term strategy, investment and foreign policy. no single country veto here. you don’t want to participate? no problem, stay in the single market but you get no money and have no say on matters like sanctions or military aid.

  • optionally in the future: some countries federate
