This is the best summary I could come up with:

Iceland is bracing for a volcanic eruption in the coming days after a series of earthquakes and evidence of hot magma flowing quickly underground.

The fishing town of Grindavik, home to 3,000 people, has been ordered to evacuate amid concerns it could be destroyed by lava flows.

Even though earthquake activity died down a little overnight into Monday, an eruption in the next few days is still “highly likely”, according to Bill McGuire, professor emeritus of geophysical and climate hazards at University College London.

If the eruption occurs in the stretch of fracture that is under the sea, it could become “explosive”, says Dr Michele Paulatto, an expert in volcanic and tectonic processes from Imperial College London.

The Eyjafjallajokull eruption back in 2010 produced a huge ash cloud that caused chaos to global air travel.

What’s more, he says, lessons have been learned since the 2010 incident and even if a future event produced a similar ash cloud there would only be about one-third of the flight cancellations compared to what occurred in 2010.

This Icelandic guy has a YouTube channel with great 4K drone footage of the area (and the rest of Iceland).

He is (obviously) doing a lot of coverage in this area currently and has some snippets of info from Icelandic Volcanologists that may not be available elsewhere.

Stupid piracy bot…

Adanisi@lemmy.zip on 13 Nov 2023 19:42 collapse

This just in: using libre software in place of proprietary shit is piracy!

Not that piracy is bad, anyways. Poor, poor small startup Google.

Nighed@sffa.community on 13 Nov 2023 20:10 next collapse

It’s taking content people have made and posted on a monetised site and serving it for free. Yes it’s piracy.

People here just hate Google so much they don’t care. It’s the content creators that will suffer.

Adanisi@lemmy.zip on 13 Nov 2023 20:41 collapse

Be real: do content creators even earn that much from ad revenue? Or is most of their income from sponsors or fan support on platforms like patreon?

From what little they earn from ad revenue, a miniscule amount of that is lost from people using adblockers, too.

Nighed@sffa.community on 13 Nov 2023 20:57 collapse

you mean the sponsor spots that can (partially) rely on the view count to be offered?

The bot doesn’t care what the channel is when it posts its links, it doesn’t check for monetisation, sponsor spots or Patreon, it just posts the link.

Adanisi@lemmy.zip on 13 Nov 2023 21:09 collapse

Any small channel earns basically nothing from ad revenue.

Any big channel won’t feel a dent from a handful viewers not viewing ads.

There’s no harm either way. And, for the end user, I think the privacy and freedom benefits outweigh any benefits of using Google software.

What’s that got to do with Icelands volcano?
