Doesn’t Hezbollah pretty much control the south of Lebanon? AFAIK there is an UN mission in the area that was supposed to help disarm them but never did in practice.

They are also highly reliant on Iran which is currently having problems. This is a ln opportunity for Lebanon to take back it’s southern border.

But this was cool before?

More ‘backed by Iran’ before

Oh, NOW it’s a problem? Ffs - this is part of the reason why everything is going tits-up. Maybe you should have done something EARLIER

The Lebanese government wasn’t really in a position to be able to dislodge Hezbollah from southern Lebanon previously, as far as I can tell. Now that Iran is in chaos they may see this as an opening to make the attempt.

Lebanon’s relationship with Hezbollah is complicated. As in Hezbollah has assassinated Lebanese PM’s for in the past for trying to control Hezbollah.

Maybe Hezbollah’s weakness has something to do with the timing, you think?

Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 02 Mar 20:36 collapse

Ok, how are you going to do that?

The reality is that Hezbollah is not some unpopular rogue terrorist operation, thy’re more a parallel state with large grass roots support from the shiah population in southern Lebanon who view them as the only protection from Israel. Any attempt to disarm them will result in a civil war which Lebanon doesn’t want.
