President Donald Trump has accused Iran of shooting down a United States military helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz, saying that he will respond to the attack.

“I have just been informed by our Great Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote in a social media post on Tuesday.

“There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack.”

How timely. Staged to green light continuation of war. He’s so deeply indebted to billionaires that he’s willing to risk leaving office like George W.

I think if he leaves office by dying it would help his legacy since obviously he’ll be kicking and screaming otherwise

Why do you think hes trying to build shit now? No one is going to give him a fucking memorial brick much less a statue or anything when hes gone

Bad leaders build monuments for themselves. Good leaders don’t need to for the people will do so once they are gone.

It wasn’t much of a ceasefire to begin with…

I know it’s a distraction but I abhor the way the man speaks.

"I was informed this morning by the joint chiefs of staff that at so and so time in such and such operating theater we lost communication with blahblah asset. All US service members were recovered safely with no loss of life. We are committed to peace, but if this was, as we believe it to be, a violation of the ceasefire agreement, this provocation cannot go unanswered. I am urgently seeking communications with the leadership of the IRGC and am directing our forces in the region to move to a state of enhanced readiness."

  • serious
  • sounds like something a Sorkin character would say
  • leaves diplomatic buffer in case it turns out something other than an Iranian missile caused the loss of equipment

"Army told me IRAN shot down our very fancy helicopter in operating theater, amazing pilots safe but now im mad. I’m gonna bomb them back >:( >:( >:("

  • unserious
  • less room for backtracking
  • sounds fucking stupid

He says “Great Military” as if it’s an official name with capital letters and all. It’s hillarious

Not sure where exactly this was supposed to happen, but a country has the right to down any unauthorized aircraft in its airspace. When Turkey downed a Russian jet nothing happened because this is just how things work. A military aircraft in another country’s airspace can’t expect to not be shot. It’s rarely done but always possible.

I believe it’s above Hormuz but the US has been launching missiles at Iran from that location so it’s a bit iffy. Iran claims to own Hormuz so from that perspective Iran is in their right.

But let’s be honest, international law is fake and rights don’t exist. Else we wouldn’t have a war with Iran to begin with seeing how bombing their country isn’t exactly legal.

The only question posed to Trump is “whaddayagunnadoaboudit”

Russia continues to fly right up to the border of other countries to test boundaries, we’ve been doing it above Alaska for decades. The one country they don’t try that shit anymore with? Turkey.

Also, this wasn’t a Navy bird patrolling coastline, an Army aircraft implies a lead up to a ground invasion and any sovereign nation would be wise to shoot first before the amphibious ships roll in.

roofTophopper@lemmy.world on 09 Jun 21:46 collapse

Was it their navy? No wait, he said something about that, ships - bottom of ocean. What about the air force? No, something something “utterly annihilated”.

Hmm, maybe someone is lying about something.

How could Biden have done this?!

Hmm, maybe someone is lying about something.

It may be that the helicopter was simply Liberti’ed.

Trump’s immediate repsonse was to call Netanyahu while downplaying the incident so this isn’t even something improbable lol.
