People who signed up for a US ‘self-deportation’ scheme say their payoffs were delayed, misdirected or never arrived – leaving them empty-handed in their home countries

Interesting how they heard the news about the self-deportation but didn’t hear the news about how Trump never pays people.

neukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.works on 19 Dec 12:28 collapse

It’s never an issue until it affects them personally.

a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world on 20 Dec 20:12 collapse

These weren’t necessarily his voters, though. They were being coerced either way.

ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world on 18 Dec 22:57 next collapse

What?! The administration run by a man who is famous for not paying people didn’t pay some people?!

NotSteve_@piefed.ca on 18 Dec 23:01 next collapse

In all seriousness, I’m more surprised that anyone got the money at all

rumba@lemmy.zip on 18 Dec 23:23 next collapse

Yeah, that’s the real takeaway. I expected them to send them out them say come and get it.

LillyPip@lemmy.ca on 18 Dec 23:55 next collapse

You should pay the first few marks so they’ll help establish the veneer of credibility. That’s Conning 101.

I forget the corresponding Ferengi Rule of Acquisition number.

mr_account@lemmy.world on 18 Dec 23:44 next collapse

Gotta do just enough payments that people won’t think it’s a lie, and that’s when you pull the (insufferably obvious) switch-a-roo

someguy3@lemmy.world on 19 Dec 00:38 collapse

Well you start it to fool people, then you cut it off. (The only reason it was offered was because it’s cheaper than sending an agent after you.)

shittydwarf@piefed.social on 18 Dec 23:09 next collapse

A trump never pays his debts

SeeMarkFly@lemmy.ml on 18 Dec 23:22 next collapse

We found somebody that believes what Trump says? They get what they deserve, LIES!

theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 19 Dec 02:54 collapse

How is this getting what they deserve? In all likelihood believed they were being deported no matter what so figured get something to help themselves and family out of it, they shouldn’t be made to feel that way or trust in the promise but that’s more naivety than anything else hardly deserving being scammed.

empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 18 Dec 23:46 next collapse

👏TRUMP👏NEVER👏PAYS👏HIS👏BILLS👏

(Unless it’s the hush money bill, or the raping little girls bill, he’s always got cash for those)

Shocked any received it, honestly.

Zephorah@discuss.online on 19 Dec 00:27 next collapse

Trump rarely pays people he looks upon as “the help”.

The man is such a ghetto trash human being.

Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works on 19 Dec 00:30 next collapse

I never understood this, maybe they just need the money that badly or are outright threatened.

Why would you believe they would give you money once you’re out of their country. You are no longer their problem.

theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 19 Dec 02:53 collapse

Believe you are going to be deported anyway but have some trust in “law” so do this so you get something to help you and your family out of it.

a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world on 19 Dec 00:59 next collapse

Hottie on the right definitely needs this fixed. Now, people!

expatriado@lemmy.world on 19 Dec 01:02 next collapse

if you don’t pay the first wave, there is no second wave

Odin@sh.itjust.works on 19 Dec 02:22 next collapse

A lot of countries charge you for the deportation. They will even hold you in jail until you pay it back.

porcoesphino@mander.xyz on 19 Dec 04:16 next collapse

Even with this take, it’s still dishonest. Something like this is still a pretty motivating: “we could hold you for months more or you could self deport now”. And if you’re making people sign forms saying one thing and then do another, then it’s further undermining trust in the government agencies and the rule of law. Although I suspect some groups confuse harshness with law & justice

Odin@sh.itjust.works on 19 Dec 05:04 collapse

Undermining trust in the government agencies and rule of law for who? Illegal aliens? They should not trust those agencies or rule of law. They should leave immediately. We shouldn’t be paying them anything except a bullet in their backside.

porcoesphino@mander.xyz on 19 Dec 08:27 next collapse

You seem to have a lot of faith that conditional application of laws and contracts will only affect certain groups, those groups won’t change, and that it won’t extend to you.

Funny you mention the bullet since there are people that served and took bullets for the US military only to be deported. (Sae Joon Park randomly was an Uber driver of mine a few years ago and was really good to chat with)

You seem like a pretty terrible excuse for a human. I hope you find yourself lost in this, or just screaming into a void until a lonely old age

He just said about that the “warrior bonus” or whatever it is called that the “cheque is in the mail”.

For sure doesn’t sound like BS.

I mean, they’ll probably get it. But still he has the brain of someone who would be doing cheque fraud if he hadn’t been born into money.

Catma@lemmy.world on 19 Dec 17:52 collapse

The “warrior bonus” is just money they had for housing stipends. Its literally money they probably were already getting. So it is real but fucking dumb. It has the air of delaying the first covid checks to make sure his name was on them.

That defines you as company property

If you’re upset, you can rent an apology

We are a family government forged in bureaucracy

No “I” in “team” but there’s “con” in “economy”

Were you expecting adventure

Were you hoping for fun

My friend, you’re indentured

And pleasure’s exempt from your tenure

So venture back down to your slum

That’s provided at generous prices

Your worth is determined by your sacrifices

A small term of service when down on the surface

Internment’s a freebie that comes with the purchase

I warned when they announced the program that Trump never fucking pays.

Anybody who took that deal was asking to get scammed.

IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world on 21 Dec 04:47 collapse

tbf, I’m assuming a lot of people who accepted that deal is not because they wanted 1k, it’s because that are fleeing this hellhole.

polysexualstick@lemmy.world on 19 Dec 21:12 collapse

Everyone in here going like “What did they expect lol?” needs to get their fucking moral compass checked. People in a probably very desperate situation (because for everyone else, $ 1000 wouldn’t be enough for this) were scammed by their own goddamn government. Governments are not supposed to do this, and we rely on our governments to do what they say every single day for a lot of things. Blaming the victims for this is wild to me.
