WASHINGTON — Military planning for a possible Pentagon-led operation in Cuba is quietly ramping up, in case President Donald Trump gives an order to intervene there, USA TODAY has learned.

Two sources familiar with the order spoke to USA TODAY on condition of anonymity because they’re not authorized to speak to media.

The directives appear to be an escalation of recent tensions between the U.S. and Cuba that began in January when the Trump administration curbed oil shipments to Cuba as part of a broader campaign to force sweeping political changes on the communist-run island.

At what point do we, as the American public, just say no more? I mean, we have the GAWDAMN right to guns, right? Aren’t y’all armed up the wazoo? Why aren’t we all out in the streets? Are we all hypnotized?

Crackhappy@lemmy.world on 16 Apr 09:30 next collapse

I will answer the last question with aplomb and thought. Yes, the American public has been desensitized, de-educated and disenfranchised enough that we will, indeed, take any and all dildos up the ass with a smile on our faces.

As the 2002 me would say, I was Hip Notized, by Shakira.

If you are affronted by someone replying to themself, then fuck off.

Is this even a real question? Because it seems genuine, I will treat it as such.

Instead of hand wringing and making abstract statements, you can answer your own question by explaining what this process looks like on the individual level:

Start with you. You say we have the right to guns AND aren’t you all armed up the wazoo. Assuming this means that you aren’t armed or trained. So you have to become armed and get trained to be effective in the manner you are describing. Then you have to get organized to be effective. That involves time, opportunity cost, and risk.

Move to others. This same process has to happen across a critical mass of individuals. We can barely get unions organized in the USA. That’s trying to get people to rally behind their own economic interests. It’s an order of magnitude more difficult to get people to organize for something less tangible.

Realize it’s by design. The system (capitalism) is designed to keep us all running on the hamster wheel so we cannot take the steps necessary to become individually valuable to an organized movement. In contrast, it creates paid professional positions (the police/military) to enforce the rules of that system. Currently, those that run the system are (hopefully) reaching the threshold of what the cogs will tolerate.

Call it hypnotism if you want. The truth is that the majority of the working class is still subjected to the same top down rule that that we always have been under whatever form of hierarchical rule has been the flavor of the day. I attribute the general shock that many are expressing for the current moment to recently realizing that we are all still stuck in Plato’s Cave.

What to do. Understand where you are in the arch of history. Keep pushing in the direction you want things to go. Keep passing knowledge and training on. Keep maintaining social connections with like minded individuals. Do all this so that those who are in the right place, at the right time, can do the right thing.

I would also say that you don’t need to be the person who leads a group of armed people or even in that group to begin with. The best thing you can do is think about the resistance you can provide in your daily life and if everyone does the small things that they can it will really add up. Thinking about where you spend your money and avoid any business that props up the fascist government, slowing down your pace at work and making things take longer (assuming you aren’t like a doctor or something that benefits the people), join a mutual aid group and/or donate to one, reduce the amount of oil you consume and take the bus to work one day. There are millions of everyday people and if each one started to do something small it would be huge.

50 years ago, but it’s one of those "best time to plant a tree"situations

Crackhappy@lemmy.world on 16 Apr 14:52 collapse

That’s an interesting thought. I did, in fact, plant a redwood tree at an appropriate distance from my grandmother’s house, 44 years ago. However both of us miscalculated and it ended up destroying the driveway and almost her house!

Americans benefit for imperialism, its the reason even poorest americans has obesity problems and 9 million people starve to death every year. America benefits by these wars and invasions and so do its citizens so they dont care about millions of people dying as long as they are able to get better lifestyle than most of the world. Americans wont care until they are bombed even 10% of lebanon iran gaza and countless other nations america bombed. Americans need to see destruction of war and loose their families then maybe they will understand but this will never happen so americans wont take any action either.

Why tho. Is Cuba threatening the US?

Yeah they do, they have public healthcare.

(Or had until the US made sure they run out of supplies)

USA not liking a Russian-aligned island neighbor is similar to China not liking a USA-aligned Taiwan providing a military launchpad on their maritime border.

It will be interesting to see which strategy turns out to be more effective: China’s carrot and stick approach to reclaiming Taiwan, or USA’s belligerent vendetta against Cuba.

HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social on 16 Apr 13:31 collapse

Thats a rather US centric way of looking at it. China has bigger reasons to not like Taiwan than their US support.
