Vetoes need to be abolished. But since the veto powers will veto any such motion, the UN is going to stay a toothless tiger.

FuglyDuck@lemmy.world on 19 Nov 09:14 next collapse

the UN is performing as intended. that is, to maintain power for the old super powers and prevent anyone else from complaining too much.

A less pesemistic spin is, it is allowing the nuclear armed states of the world to discuss what they agree on (or can at least acquiesce to) without direct confrontation risking nuclear armegeddon.

rammer@sopuli.xyz on 19 Nov 20:23 collapse

Not working so great lately. With the whole red lines thing with Russia and their change of nuclear doctrine.

I propose we switch to preferential voting, rolling dice or thunderdome for deciding these matters.

Personally, I would really like to see Trump wielding a chainsaw, but PV is my second choice.

Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world on 19 Nov 10:52 collapse

I’d love to see a bare knuckle fight to the death between Trump and Zelenskyy or pretty much any world leader who’s in reasonably good shape.

Not necessarily to decide anything, just for shits and giggles 🤷

Gsus4@mander.xyz on 19 Nov 10:56 next collapse

That’s how president Camacho succeeds trump.

Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world on 19 Nov 11:02 next collapse

Would be a significant improvement tbh… Can we just sentence Trump to rehabilitation now?

chaosCruiser@futurology.today on 19 Nov 11:11 next collapse

That guy is ripped! If he also has the skills to handle weapons, he would win just about any thundervote.

wewbull@feddit.uk on 19 Nov 13:11 collapse

Camacho was a good president. He listened to Not Sure (eventually).

Gsus4@mander.xyz on 19 Nov 13:19 collapse

Yeah, that film was way too optimistic…

NotSteve_@lemmy.ca on 19 Nov 15:36 collapse

I’d love to see Justin Trudeau take on Trump since he has boxing experience

Gsus4@mander.xyz on 19 Nov 10:57 collapse

No, after WW3 we will have the Commonwealth of Concord, just like we had the League of Nations, the Concert of Europe, the Peace of Westphalia… :/

hemmes@lemmy.world on 19 Nov 11:42 next collapse

Let me get this straight.

Russia can tell the UN to fuck off and continue to trade arms with embargoed countries, but also retain Veto powers?

lemmingthelemmers@lemmy.world on 19 Nov 12:34 next collapse

What do you think the US is doing regarding Israel?

kungen@feddit.nu on 19 Nov 13:08 next collapse

Nice, a classic «а у вас негров вешают»

lemmingthelemmers@lemmy.world on 20 Nov 13:31 collapse

You’re mad because it’s true.

hemmes@lemmy.world on 19 Nov 15:44 collapse

The UN doesn’t have an embargo in place for Israel.

rammer@sopuli.xyz on 19 Nov 20:21 collapse

I wonder why…

Yes. The conditions of maintaining a veto doesn’t relate to being a member in good standing.

homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world on 19 Nov 11:49 next collapse

Russia really, really wants war. But why?

IndustryStandard@lemmy.world on 19 Nov 15:45 collapse

Playing devils advocate: If the UN deploys security forces that will benefit the west who runs the UN. It might result in a similar resolution as what happened to Haiti with the UN keeping a US backed dictator in power.

AliSaket@mander.xyz on 19 Nov 12:21 collapse

No surprise there. Not too long ago they have given up their ‘neutral’ stance (wasn’t really when Wagner was involved with the RSF) and gained support from the SAF for the construction of a Russian naval base, while the Wagner group still fights with the RSF.
