If I were a conspiracy theorist I would say that the release of the Files were redacted in such a way to topple political adversaries in Europe. I mean that goal is part the Heritage Project 2025.

I have been following British media a bit and unless I am mistaken, this Mandelson chap ran afoul of his Epstein conduct back in September, which was before the DOJ even started releasing the Epstein files as part of the Epstein act, which hadn’t passed at the time. The subsequent release and redactions seem to have exposed even more, but his goose was cooked before that.
Current allegations are that Mandelson handed Epstein extremely sensitive government information. I forget what Brits call it, but we’d say it was classified.
And it currently seems like PM Kier Starmer is probably going to fall with him, since he apparently knew about Mendelson’s continuing association with post-conviction Epstein.
Anyways, that one particularly seems somewhat unrelated to the redaction choices.

As a Brit I can assure you that a) he has absolutely most certainly not done more than the previous Tory governments to mess the country up. Lizz Truss, for only a single example, ruined the economy in 40 odd days. b) the prevailing opinion is not that he has been worse than the Tories. I don’t disagree with anything else you’ve listed. I’m just struggling to see how any of that is worse than what 14 years of a Tory government provided? On top of a ruined economy, failing public services, huge NHS waiting times etc. they also introduced the 9k tuition fees.

Because I can tell you now that if you were of voting age living through those Tory governments and you were living in the country, as me, you would be far more bitter about the 14 years of turning our country to shit than a year and a half of an incompetent slightly authoritarian Labour government.
The majority of people would say the same. The Tories were voted out by a sweeping majority in 2024 because of this. UK citizens loathed the party and a good deal many still do, hence the rise of Reform.

You should know it’s already been locked down in the UK for a long time, not just by Palantir either, over ten years, going on 20 really. But what they are doing now is different, and this information will be accessible to more groups of people, and is being done to utilize new technology that didn’t exist back then.

It’s sort of the whole thing about Palantir, and like companies, they aren’t the only ones. They are tapping into a lot of information streams, including ones people assume they don’t have access to, including ones they aren’t supposed to have access to. Because the information is never used in court it’s never challenged, any information they get from such systems they find parallel constructions for the evidence, a plausible legal way they found that evidence they want to use in court.
I will jot a note on your comment and send you something about it when I find a good article about what I’m talking about. The article(s) I am referencing from memory are not findable by search engines as such due to enshitified search results, and time as one article about Palantir, and the UK, was like 2010 or so. Not just palantir, but they were setting Natsec to tap into the internet in the UK, and US was following suit, on a base level.
But beyond that longstanding spying, this is a new beast entirely, utilizing new technologies past authoritarians couldn’t dream of, to run ai threat detection, and make scores on people, that they then discreetly filter through, to you getting that loan at your bank, that job, the background check, and in the dystopian future, determining the personalized prices you are offered for goods, online or in person with digital price tags, down to the results your search engine shows you.

They are starting to police the internet more though. I personally think that’s due to the huge amounts of misinformation used to manipulate the public via social media. I.e. The Southport Riots which were inflamed by spreading of lies about immigrants.
This is probably an unpopular opinion here but I think there should be more control. Peoples view of reality is being completely distorted by the internet and what they see and read. It will only get worse with AI and deepfakes. I personally think it does need more policing. There is a good documentary called "Hypernormalisation’ by Adam Curtis that explores the reality distortion we experience. It is worth watching.
My political views are that one of governments main duties is to protect citizens from harm. That includes protecting them from business malpractices from social media companies and foreign influencers looking to destabilise the population. I believe our government should take action to prevent harm from those.
I am not being wilfully ignorant of what they are doing. I support it. That may make me unpopular here but so be it. I stand by that belief. I will change it if I am presented with tangible evidence of things like social ratings for citizens or nefarious uses of peoples information. I haven’t seen any this far though. They’re all getting away with it, and all the victims get is a hundred headlines about Musk being named in the files, and having their lives endangered from the terrible Don-centric redaction.
Resignation is often used in these kinds of cases, because there’s really no framework to fire them, since they didn’t actually violate any of the terms on which they’re hired. They should be tried for the crimes they’ve committed under the jurisdiction of the place where the crime was committed. Not in some random board meeting in a different country.
What happens is that the board says “even if you didn’t violate our terms or any local laws, we don’t see our organization being able to work with someone like you, so we urge you to do what is best for both parts, which is that you resign voluntarily.”
If they don’t, then the board can say “the existence of potential criminal cases against you can harm the reputation of our organization, so now you’re fired.” The outcome is almost the same, but this could create a lot more negative attention to what the company knew about.
Oh yes, I understand how they go about smoothing everything over.
But, given the details we know, don’t you think:
• one corporate resignation,
• one months-prior bureaucrat firing, and,
• one investigation into a former PM,
is pretty far removed from could be considered a proportional fallout?
Absolutely, but it isn’t up to their employers to punish them.

We still have them, of course, but we make a bit more of a show of getting rid of them. In the US it seems they mostly stay where they are until people forget about it. I hope they never forget.

I expect revelations about the role of all the intelligence agencies involved and subsequent reforms.

I didn’t read the article but if it’s supposed to make us feel good that Europe is doing things, well it isn’t.
Yeah, I notice they’ve only “toppled” centre-right parties though, with far-right parties waiting in the wings.
I will say, that even en the EU (political zone) the files didn’t do as much as they should have. What they revealed, besides the horrific abuses, is the level of political meddling of a certain side to bring al right leaders in position of power (see the Steve Bannon records on the lists).
