They’re just butt-hurt that Canada isn’t spending the extra money on US weapons. This whole “military spending” thing is nothing but a shakedown to get allies to increase weapons purchases from US manufacturers.

CircaV@lemmy.ca on 21 May 10:48 next collapse

And Canada is buying gripens not f35s so the US can go pound sand.

mrdown@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 21 May 12:51 next collapse

Canada did not cancel any f-35 contracts yet

CircaV@lemmy.ca on 21 May 14:30 collapse

We’d better.

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca on 21 May 15:06 collapse

It would lose us billions.

Killer57@lemmy.ca on 21 May 15:39 collapse

Better to lose money, then have a worthless plane.

youcantreadthis@quokk.au on 21 May 13:34 collapse

Buying f35s now is insane why would you buy war planes from a rabid dog who probably built a backdoor in

CircaV@lemmy.ca on 21 May 14:30 collapse

Everyone is united in that view. Giving Carney the benefit of the doubt, I think he is ragging the puck before making it formal that we are withdrawing our pre-existing order for 16 F35s with the Americans

el_eh_chase@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 21 May 14:53 next collapse

Unfortunately, I think most of the new military spending that brings our total to the 2% of GDP target is going to American manufacturers. I get the feeling that Carney doesn’t want to upset the status quo too much, despite the talk. I think he still counts on a path back to the way things were, just maybe on a longer timeline.

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca on 21 May 15:06 collapse

Canada has a lot of weapons components manufacturing.

JohnnyCanuck@lemmy.ca on 21 May 07:19 next collapse

The comments on that article are quite… Something.

redsand@infosec.pub on 21 May 07:26 next collapse

Break 5 eyes Canada. Get Carney to buy some balls

Killer57@lemmy.ca on 21 May 15:42 collapse

For some unhinged reason, Trump wanted to kick Canada out of the five eyes last year, so as a response we just stopped sharing information with the US, and the US just kind of Kicked themselves out.

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip on 21 May 07:57 next collapse

Cheesus. The USA are really set on digging themselves deeper and deeper. They think they’re invincible, I call it hubris.

Blurntout@lemmy.ca on 21 May 08:24 next collapse

There’s just a pinch of truth in everything the Cheeto says 😅 the rest is pure delusional fever dream.

Canada is failing the same way every advanced economy is including the US everyone is failing their citizens 💀 not in a x is better than y kind of way just the whole world may be on one of the darkest trajectories rip

sturmblast@lemmy.world on 21 May 09:35 collapse

Its Trump… Not the usa

Captain_Buddha@lemmy.world on 21 May 09:42 next collapse

Its *Republicans and neoliberal fascists… and, admittedly, 30-50% of the USA.

sturmblast@lemmy.world on 21 May 10:54 collapse

Much closer to 30%

Jhex@lemmy.world on 21 May 12:56 next collapse

but apparently enough to silence the other mythical 70%

Captain_Buddha@lemmy.world on 21 May 13:23 collapse

I like your optimism!

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip on 21 May 10:29 next collapse

USA meaning the government of that country. It’s not just Trump.

Spacehooks@reddthat.com on 21 May 10:54 collapse

Sadly seems Trump only has yes men in goverment. Can’t believe its thats easy in America.

Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca on 21 May 10:46 next collapse

The US elected the orange turd, and represents what the US has become very well.

CircaV@lemmy.ca on 21 May 10:48 next collapse

77mlion Americans support this.

sturmblast@lemmy.world on 21 May 10:53 collapse

Thats not true at all actually

CircaV@lemmy.ca on 21 May 11:17 collapse

77 million Americans supported this enough to vote him In AGAIN

lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world on 21 May 13:14 collapse

Yeah no shit. They saw Trump 1.0 and still inflicted him on the world again. Americans fucking suck.

mrdown@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 21 May 12:49 next collapse

No it the usa . Trumo is just the current figurehead

masterspace@lemmy.ca on 21 May 13:19 next collapse

Lmfao.

No, it’s the US.

Trump is not an aberration, he is an exact representation of American values. He did not rise from a vacuum, he rose from decades of Americans blindly following Republicans to their doom.

You cannot say that he does not represent the US when he was voted into office on two non-consecutive turns.

America is a shit hole country, filled with shit hole people, who vote for shit hole representatives. There may be occasional flecks of not shit in there, but you’re just hollow husks of corns in a sea of shit.

Rothe@piefed.social on 21 May 12:53 next collapse

More importantly it is the whole cabal of billionaire oligarchs.

youcantreadthis@quokk.au on 21 May 13:35 next collapse

Trump is america the man

Vergissmeinnicht@lemmy.ca on 21 May 13:51 collapse

Congress isn’t stopping him.

CircaV@lemmy.ca on 21 May 10:47 next collapse

It’s a board that’s been around for 80 years. Was very active and crucial in past ww wars. If the US wants to act childish and petty 🇨🇦could literally care less. Our news coverage of this yesterday said just that, from high ranking military leaders.

ClownStatue@piefed.social on 21 May 12:23 collapse

Canada _couldn’t _ care less. Sorry to be pedantic, but they say opposite things.

Despite that, agreed. Canada seems to “get it” with regards to the US. If Trump and friends want to behave like adults, they come to the table. If not, they’re just going to isolate them further. Eventually the US will “American Exceptionalism” itself right into a corner all by its lonesome little self. Then all that debt will really start to hurt.

I’ve always felt there was a difference between people like McConnell and ones like the current crop of Republicans (Trump, Boebert, MTG, etc.). McConnell knew that US soft power as incredibly powerful, and that the dollar being the global reserve currency massively props up the US economy. They built this myth of “American Exceptionalism” to explain why we have it so great when it was these boring things that made that myth possible. Basically, they toed the line of selling the lie while never intending to do anything about those “government handouts” that helped perpetuate their myth.

This new breed sees the myth as dogma. They think the US is actually a gift to the world, ordained by God Himself. They don’t understand soft power, or how reserve currencies work, so they don’t understand what gutting programs like USAid actually does. They literally believe American Exceptionalism is just a fact of the world without understanding why, other than “we’re number 1.” It was always going to happen. The Republicans did this to themselves, and the country.

CircaV@lemmy.ca on 21 May 14:32 collapse

Well our politicans are performing like they “care” as they should but Canadians are fucking DONE with the US. And it’s permanent and generational.

And I hope the world moves away from the US dollar as the petrodollar.

mrdown@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 21 May 12:47 next collapse
