Good luck to them. Beating McDonald’s prices might not be too hard though, since they haven’t had good prices in over a decade. But if they can be cheaper, I’d try them.

If they're cheaper, I'd consider it. After all, it's not like McDonald's sells a lot of actual meat. Not going to give up meat, but fast-food vegetables that actually taste decent would be an interesting change.

ElcaineVolta@kbin.melroy.org on 16 Jan 2025 22:51 collapse

you're not the one giving it up.

True, I'm an evolved omnivore who still requires meat proteins to properly function.

Not only is this completely untrue, but a plant-based diet over an omnivorous one comes with multifarious benefits to short- and long-term health.

I’ve actually had some decent vegan fast food. The PLNT Burger chain in the U.S. is tasty, but it’s more expensive than it should be.

I’m lucky enough to have a few good local places with better prices. My local pub (I wish I could shout it out, but it’d reveal my location too specifically) has a few great Impossible options that don’t cost too much.

Plants are cheaper, so it should be cheaper yes

x00z@lemmy.world on 17 Jan 2025 18:25 next collapse

Business wise it is pretty normal for prices to still be higher though. New industries are always more expensive. They need to scale up to be able to lower the prices. There’s not enough competition to keep prices low. And there’s a lot of R&D that is being put into these products.

But it’s not a bad thing. We should vote with our money. I’d prefer to pay more now so these companies see there’s money to be made.

ALiteralCabbage@feddit.uk on 23 Jan 2025 12:39 collapse

If the food is highly processed (like PLNT’s burgers) then it makes sense that it would be more expensive than animal products as the infrastructure to produce it doesn’t exist on nearly the same scale.

jagged_circle@feddit.nl on 23 Jan 2025 14:56 collapse

Fortunately great burgers can be made from lightly processed beans

ALiteralCabbage@feddit.uk on 23 Jan 2025 15:38 collapse

This is true. But in my experience most places selling plant based burgers have gone for the “fake meat” option which, frankly, is unbelievably annoying - at least in the UK (where I am).
