Burger King Austria has become the first food service outlet to launch Oatly‘s Baristamatic oat milk, which has been specially developed for use in fully automatic coffee machines. Following the launch, Burger King will reportedly stop using cow’s milk for specialty coffees at all its Austrian locations.

That’s good news, especially using oat milk instead of something like almond milk that still has relatively high environmental cost.

I agree. Oat milk is literally some oat and water. I mean, it doesn’t get cheaper to make than this…

What is linked is full of misinformation and disinformation. For instance, Canola oil does not naturally contain any trans fat and only has very small traces after refining. Dairy, for what it’s worth, also contains similar amounts trans fat

The article just also completely glances over environmental factors. Even if we took all this site’s claims as true (which we shouldn’t, they are citing someone who works for an animal ag lobby group), a claimed 1/3 emissions instead of a 75% reduction would makes it a “lie” because it doesn’t fix everything?

This site is also full of LLM generated articles with AI generated images, and this article has some signs of LLM writing: random bold, heavy em dash use, links to articles that have zero relation, etc.

That was just literally the first search result. The fact stands that oat milk is just some oats and water. Dirt cheap to produce and - riding the eco green trend - easy to market. I’m not disputing the high impact of dairy, I’m just saying that based on the ingredients and amount of labor needed to produce it should be cheap and honest with what it is. My gripe is the marketing of it, not that it exists.

Oatly ferments their milk, as far as I’m aware. Either way, it does taste significantly different from lots of other brands.

As far as I know they add an enzyme to split the long strands of carbohydrates into smaller ones (sugar) and they emulsify it with canola oil.

Though it is worth noting that almond milk is still lower than dairy across every environmental metric. Including water use weighted by water scarcity

Absolutely, I just appreciate it that oats are a more responsible crop. I feel almonds are not great overall, though they are still much better than meat.

Nice, really like this for animals and the environment. That being said, sadly, oatly is not gluten free…I wish they would choose an allergy friendly alternative

Wait, apparently this varies from region to region after looking this up to check. In the US and Canada, Oatly is gluten free, but Europe and Asia it can have small amounts of it (from I think cross contamination)
