What’s the point of pain? Stimulating action to escape danger. What kind of cruel god would have things that cannot escape feel pain? (Metaphorically. The real question is- how would an organism have enough spare energy to perceive and interpret pain without any benefit?)
Sorry, I know this is a shitpost, I’ve just been frustrated with this argument a lot lately
I don’t think it’s intended to be a good faith argument, as you’re probably already aware. I’ve never heard someone actually start presenting evidence that negative tropism and communication alone automatically equate to pain. It’s already a very abstract and subjective phenomenon among people, with factors including, physical, chemical, psychological, and even social stimuli.
I don’t imagine someone being able to effectively compare that to something without nerves. I’ve heard plants have internal chemical signaling systems. So do we, and we don’t feel them until they affect the nervous system, sometimes not even then.
You’re right, I shouldn’t engage at all at that point, but I get frog boiled and then I’m too proud to leave it. Hopefully writing that out and naming the issue as pride can quell the urge for me going forward, because I don’t think I realized that that’s the reason I keep going.
