As humans, I think we like to think of ourselves as moral, intelligent, and unique creatures. But our ability to shut down our greatest faculties - morality, intelligence, empathy, etc. - may be our defining feature as a species.

Being an undercover investigator of abuses of non-human animals in non-human animal agriculture must be one of the most challenging jobs in the world. I tip my cap to Pete, or whatever his real name is.

Research has shown that the slaughterhouse environment, and the nature of slaughterhouse work itself, can and does have notable psychological impacts on workers. For example, slaughterhouse workers are four times more likely to be clinically depressed than the general public, according to a 2015 study.

When I picture what “hell” or what unimaginable suffering looks like, I picture large-scale non-human animal agriculture, like factory farms.
