Does wealth override race?

Wealth absolutely overrides race. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but ICE isn’t raiding the nicest restaurants in town or the country clubs.

MeekerThanBeaker@lemmy.world on 08 Mar 23:49 next collapse

I think everyone should be wealthy, then racism will finally be solved! Why aren’t they trying that?!

piconaut@lemmy.ca on 09 Mar 00:34 collapse

I think they’ve been trying to print more money so everyone can just have more but it doesn’t seem to be going well for some reason.

Something something trickle down

alternategait@lemmy.world on 08 Mar 23:53 collapse

Wealth overrides race in situations where wealth is a know factor. Otherwise totally famous/wealthy black/POC are still targeted to their shock.

That’s not really a good example. He was fully masked and all the people involved were black (the bank teller who called the cops, the cops that showed up, etc.). He was also “sketchy” (from the bank teller’s perspective) with writing an awkward note to withdraw a large sum of money and that he wanted it done discreetly. It was still a fuck up on Bank of America’s part, but in this instance I give the bank teller some amount of understanding when the entire context is taken into considering. Ryan Coogler even said he was satisfied with how BoA apologized and whatnot.

All that being said, if it was a poor person in this situation… I highly doubt the outcome would’ve been so cordial

alternategait@lemmy.world on 09 Mar 13:03 collapse

Fair enough. I spent <5 seconds googling and choose the least spammy looking result on the front page.

cheese_greater@lemmy.world on 08 Mar 23:49 next collapse

Probably doesnt work as well for profiling or in the absence of opaquely tinted windows

RustyShackleford@piefed.social on 09 Mar 00:09 next collapse

It works this way because rich people can afford lawyers, something the less wealthy can’t readily afford.

Witchfire@lemmy.world on 09 Mar 00:49 collapse

There’s more to it than that. A rich person can afford a luxury car, a poor person might have a beater or a low cost lease. Guess which one the police are going to actually stop

It’s systemic

FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world on 09 Mar 00:10 next collapse

From what i know they’ve targetted places they expect illegal immigrants to work, like Target / Walmart (maybe both), and have more heavily targetted cities and certain states. (Minneapolis in Minnesota, though thst was largely for gangster-political reasons). Most rich americans live in suburbs or remote or gated communities, so i guess they get to avoid stuff like this.

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world on 09 Mar 00:32 collapse

They’re clearly using “illegal immigrants” as cover for imprisoning and deporting as many non-whites as they can. It’s an excuse by white supremacist nazis to start a new “final solution”. They’re currently building new concentration camps.

FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world on 09 Mar 00:33 collapse

Do you know where they’re building them?

Witchfire@lemmy.world on 09 Mar 00:50 next collapse

Everywhere. Just open the news. Every random backwoods has a pending proposal from a vulture capitalist.

You know how many random abandoned malls and warehouses the US has? The K in Kmart will soon stand for “killing”

Think more like… people are getting arrested for simply having/seeing CSAM but the rich people who got exposed actually doing that stuff aren’t getting touched. It’s absolutely about money.

OriginEnergySux@lemmy.world on 09 Mar 00:31 next collapse

I think green is the only colour that doesnt suffer (much) racism

gesshoku@lemmy.zip on 10 Mar 15:02 collapse

I think I have an idea why.

Not if they’re Jesuits will the be harassed by ICE.

TachyonTele@piefed.social on 09 Mar 01:09 collapse

What does that even mean?

msokiovt@lemmy.today on 09 Mar 17:44 collapse

In other words, if you’re one of them (a Jesuit), you’re left alone, because you’re part of the world domination plan.

TachyonTele@piefed.social on 09 Mar 21:29 collapse

Riight

JoMiran@lemmy.ml on 09 Mar 01:08 next collapse

Yes. I’m a person of color that gets mistaken for hispanic, middle eastern, etc depending on location (I’m very mixed). I am also rich by most definitions (peasant by today’s standards). I made it a point to buy a brand new BMW i4 M50 EV and a used 2021 Mercedes Benz C63 AMG because I was getting harassed while driving my beloved Ford Fiesta. Since getting the nice cars, I have not been bothered once.

It’s bullshit, but I understand the “why”. Bothering someone wity money is a pain in the ass and detrimental to their career. They can fuck with poor people all day long without consequences.

chunkystyles@sopuli.xyz on 09 Mar 12:45 collapse

Well, and there’s this ideology in this country that if you’re wealthy, it’s because to deserve to be because you’re a good person.

The flip side of that is the cops see the poor as generally up to no good.

spongebue@lemmy.world on 09 Mar 03:21 collapse

For what it’s worth, off duty cops who aren’t white were getting harassed by ICE in the Minneapolis area. Little different than class, but still something.
