Why are there so many memes where there’s a screenshot on top of some random stock photo background? This must be coming from some feature in some app, but I’ve never seen an app that has this feature.

I've noticed this too on clips of social media posts. I would imagine the purpose is to standardize the size of pictures into a square, but I don't know what tool is doing it.
Do you have an example of one of these you can link? I can’t picture seeing this, but maybe I just haven’t noticed.

Thanks! Now that you jogged my memory, I am familiar with that format… not that I have anything to add to the discussion. My curiosity is satiated, though.
I literally just asked this, too. Wtaf is pushing this new trend?
I’m glad I’m not the only one finding this weird
I think that’s just @LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone making those memes a little more pleasing to the eye.
Sadly I can't take credit, it's how I'm finding them.
Where are you finding them? Any idea why they all have that format?
They're what my algorithm is giving me on Instagram. Don't know if it's a current trend or just my algorithm knows I like it
I see. So it’s probably an instagram thing. That would also explain the square format.
