I’m a guy and I have one every 2 or 3 months. But at work I think some guys have one more than once a month because they look groomed all the time.
PS: I trim my beard once a week. I’m talking about haircuts specifically.

Probably between 1-2 months for me.
I haven’t had a haircut since I was 19 (I am currently 40).
Because of hair loss or do you have one hell of a mane?
One hell of a mane 😎
I am not jealous at all 😐
Hair grows 6" a year. Your hair is 10 feet long?
IDK where you heard that considering hair grows different speeds for different people. It also doesn’t keep getting longer forever.
On average it grows 6" a year. I looked it up on the internet. Do you have the internet?
So you just went by the AI blurb at the top of the page. Got it.
What are you so butthurt about? I got it from Wikipedia, which also says, “Most humans develop the longest thickest hair on their scalps and (mostly observed in males) faces. This hair will usually grow to several feet before terminating, but many humans develop much longer hair.”
Go away, angry little man.
Any emotional tone you read in my replies is entitely in your own head, dude.
KOLANAKI
I gave up and just grew it out cos I would need one after like a month
I get mine done about every 1-2 months. Usually when it starts poking me in the ears and getting annoying.
My mate at work who’s very fashion conscious gets his done every 3 weeks or so.
I’m a “two on top, one on the sides” dude. I’m the same, the second my hair starts coming over my ears then I’m away to the barber. Two months is decent, though if I’m not able to get there through work or being away from home, I’ll stretch it to three months but I feel a bit like Noel Gallagher when my hair starts coming down to my lugholes.
That said, I treat it as a bit of a relaxation sesh. I’ll ask the barber for a “full service” and close my eyes for half hour or 45 mins and let the barber do his thing with the clippers and the hot shave and the massage and all that jazz. A guilty pleasure every other month or so.
I cut my hair approximately once every three months
Every three to four months and I cut my own hair now too
About every 3-4 weeks.
Yeah, I used to go to a place where they’d schedule me out based on three weeks, which I liked better, but now this new place leaves it to me to remember and schedule myself. I don’t remember, so it’s closer to 4-5 weeks.
I cut my hair myself, whenever I want a change :) (once every few months)
Same, except I kinda just cut off a bit here and there as adjustments every now and then. So I never really have a new haircut, it stays somewhat stable.
Every 6 weeks but my hair grows quite fast.
Every 5-6 weeks for me, once it starts growing over my ears on the sides
When I need too much of the shampoo :)
I have an electric cutter with a set length and just run it through my hair about once a week at the same time I’m doing my beard.
My scalp gets really itchy if my hair is too long and doing it weekly means it takes no time at all.
I think I had one back in the late 90s.
Now-a-days nature takes care of it.
Like birds come in and eat your hair or something?
I think I'd notice birds, it could be spiders though.
My hair is pretty thin white and wispy whatever of it is left..
But it's significantly less strong than steel - maybe pacifist spiders who resent their own culture.
every 3 months if possible, if it gets too long my atopic dermatitis will start to act up because of the long hair irritating the skin, plus long hair keeps allergens around longer.
Twice a year. I always go for a short cut and then grow it out until it annoys me.
I never cared about having a consistent look.
Do you have problems with the tips getting dry and looking unkept?
Not at all. It’s perfectly straight and looks healthy, no matter what I do - as long as I wash it every other day.
I only use one of those all in one shampoos and a blow dryer. I don’t even use a comb or brush. Yet, I got quite a few comments about having especially healthy looking hair from woman.
I really don’t keep track of the interval. I cut it when ever it starts to intrude into my field of vision.
I am usually on a 6 month rhythm. Cut short and then slowly transition to longer hair and then cutting when it gets annoying. Currently I am letting it grow even longer, just to check how it looks. But I have curly hair, so my rhythm definitely wouldn’t work on everybody
Once a year. I look like an animal all the time
Even after the haircut?
Then they look like a well groomed animal.
*✨MAJESTIC✨*
I look like a human 3 months a year: mid autumn - mid winter.
Hey, me too! I love that my appearance progresses with the seasons. I like growing through different styles, and the ritual of the yearly cut.
I haven’t had my hair cut since ‘08.
I could probably go get it done, but it looks alright and doesn’t seem to grow further than the small of my back.
I’m a 40-year old woman.
You should probably trim the ends! 17 years is…kind of way too long to go without a trim. You might have split ends.
I shave my head in the shower every couple of days. Trim my beard once a week.
4-6 months. It’s frankly too long, but I just don’t want to bother…
It’s been like 6 months for me. I’ve gone over a year before. I have thrash metal hair though. lol.
🤘
Every 6-8 weeks. 2 weeks before my next appointment my hair starts to look like shit, only to look great 3 days before.
Is your local barber quite busy?
I always make a new appointment directly after my haircut, else I will get an appointment way too late. They are a bit busy and need a week in advance, but more importantly, I hate calling people.
My hair grows fast enough that if I wanted it to stay a specific style it’d need cut probably more than once a month. However, I typically just change the way I part it as it grows. It doesn’t look too bad at any stage, though I basically just slowly transition from looking like a fed to looking like the guys in the fourth Harry Potter movie lol.
It takes about 3-4 months for it to go from 2in on top to being annoyingly long. Probably closer to 5 for it to be like getting in my mouth when the wind blows.
And hey you can have long hair and still look “groomed” btw, just got to figure out how to style it right
Edit: I have straight hair btw with some but not a lot of natural volume. If I had curly hair I could likely let it grow longer without feeling the need to cut it.
I think it’s called the “wolf’s mane” look. Pretty awesome.
I want to go for this look but i need an ungodly amount of shampoo since my hair gets sweaty. Let’s see
I donate my hair about every 18 months. 😉
My spouse goes every 4 weeks. He has an undercut and doesn’t trust my shaky hands with the trimmer :D
Every 5-10 years as it’s to expensive for me to get one and have to be incredibly lucky to get one.
You live on a deserted island or something? 😁
It’s called Amerikkka. You know. 4th world country, basic necessities are 400% percent expensive, no medical care that doesn’t cost 4,000 bucks.
Are you living in a deserted island or something? Because everyone knows the fuck hell whole of this Amerikkka country.
1st world – the US and its allies
2nd world – the USSR and its allies
3rd world – unaligned nations
4th world – the disenfranchised and disregarded under-society exploited by, but otherwise ignored by political powers
i shave my head twice a week, because i have the fantastic luck to have incredibly thick hair, and since 22, mpb.
But you prefer the bald look?
put it this way, i’m no patrick stewart. i did not pull the look off.
Well, first let me say that you should go to the barber as often as you want, not as often as an average man does.
I personally go every 3 months because I have long hair and only need to get it into a bit of shape regularly. If I had a short hairstyle I would go more often.
This is kind of a tautological answer. Of course it’s as often as I want, but what do I want? I had that question when I started making my own decisions on my hair. I was never fully happy with how things looked and haven’t figured out how to style it the way I like. What part of it was I unhappy with? I couldn’t tell. Would more frequent hair cuts help? Or less frequent so it spends more time in that slightly grown out state and I have more consistent hair to work with? And so many other questions.
If you know that most people get their hair cut after X weeks, then that gives you a starting point to experiment with instead of going into it completely blind.
What people do in that case is look at pictures of people with various hairstyles online, trying to find one where they feel like “this looks good, I want to try that one”. Or consult with a good hairdresser when you’re there who might have some suggestions of what could fit you. Nowadays there are even apps where one can try to put various hairstyles onto their own picture.
I don’t know what problems OP is facing, but in my case, this is basically what the hairdresser recommended that I do and also what I tried doing. Except it didn’t help because nothing was appealing to me (I’m rather change adverse). I really needed to maintain a particular style for a while to get used to it before I could decide if I liked it or not. After that time has passed, I couldn’t tell if I disliked it because it was grown out too much or if I just didn’t like that cut, or if it was some other reason.
Also for people like me atleast, yeah it might look good on this or that person, but they don’t look anything like me.
I’ve basically just resorted to never cutting my hair though. I’ve had everything from darn near bald to just past my shoulderbladees which is about where I am currently.
I think you’re technically supposed to every two weeks. I have very short hair and that’s how often I cut mine to keep its style. I taught myself to cut my own hair though, for most people this would be very expensive.
why would you be supposed to cut your hair in any specific way? are you in the army or something?
no lol, my hair is really short on the sides, like a couple centimeters. If you have super short hair then you’re supposed to cut it every 2 weeks to keep it short. It’s longer on top.
I don’t get my hair cut that frequently, but to each their own. This was downvoted to zero when I found it, I like to imagine one of the “six months” or “never” guys were responsible.
I try to do every 6 weeks
If I’m going to a wedding or something at the 4+ week mark I’ll get it done early
If I don’t get it done until 8+ weeks it starts to get into an unmanageably scruffy zone
Every month if you want to look sharp. I do every 2 since I care less.
Started dating a girl who liked it when I grew it out… so haven’t cut it just about ten years. She’s gone, but the hair stayed. I never found a barber who could consistently cut it the way I liked, so the only alternative I could see is regularly buzzing everything off.
Every 3 to 4 months I’d say. This is despite the fact that it’s free because both my mom and sister are hairdressers.
I think once every 2 months is about average. I wait 5 months.
haven’t cut my hair in years, long hair supremacy.
I think my last one was about thirty years ago. Or close.
:(
why is that sad?
whenever my family nags me about it too much lol
Yup. I get one when my wife tells me it’s time.
Once a year, sometimes once in two years. But I’m also not working in a job where my haircut matters.
A full haircut once a month with a cleanup 2 weeks in. My hair is thick as fuck and grows pretty quickly, so I need to stay on top of it.
I cut my own hair for years using clippers, but within the last few years started going to get it cut because they do a better job.
You made of money?
Cleanups are free since I pay ahead of time.
3 weeks is my sweet spot. the barber is hot
I have long hair but I touch up my undercut every other week or so, i just do it myself
TIL most dudes on Lemmy grow long hair
Naturally
I grew my hair down to my ass until it stopped growing around 25. I would’ve kept it longer, but I balded lol.
The last cut was in 1999 to clean up an undercut. It got longer for about 15 years after that. Now it gets shorter, thinner, and balder, every day.
Alright since we are on this topic, I am gonna ask how y’all keep a straight face when a mirror is placed in front of you for about 30-45m straight?
I cannot, for the love of god, stop my smile at all. Especially when I’m slowly transitioning to a new look, I just can’t stop smiling when a mirror is placed in front of me. Feels extremely awkward when a guy is working on you and you starts smiling for no reason.
That being said, I’m due for a haircut now. Planning to do it by this weekend. Last I got my haircut was in June(!). So, a good 2½ months.
You… smile… in front of a mirror? Why?
Umm… idk I am just too smiley ig. When I’m actively doing something infront of mirror I do not smile like a maniac tho. It only happens when I’m just sitting idle and seeing my face.
Can’t definitively say this is a you thing, but this is very much not a me thing.
Why would you want to stop yourself from smiling? Getting a fresh haircut and seeing it take shape sounds like a very good reason to smile.
4-6 weeks
My last haircut was in October 2019 when I decided I wanted to, starting then, go to an every-six-months haircut schedule
I cut my own hair every once a year for winter solstice. I shave my partner’s undercut every week or two tho.
I think same as you 3 months or even 4 months
About once a month I have more or less all the hairs on my head cut
6 to 8 weeks. If I allowed it, my vanity would have it closer to every 4 weeks but that’s an expensive indulgence so I just look like a need a haircut a lot of the time.
I cut my hair every decade or so, whether it needs it or not.
Around 8 times a year.
I take my son to the barber and we have a haircut together.
If it was just myself I wouldn’t notice when my hair was long but I can see it on him so I know when its time.
When my wife states I’m looking too much like a murderhobo which can be from three months to a year depending.
I bought the proper hardware to cut my own hair, learned how to do the fades. It's easy to keep it the same length all the time this way.
Mainly I just got sick of paying so much for a 10 minute cut.
Edit: I'm not gonna say it was smooth sailing from day 1 I should add, I buzz cut my failures off as I was learning a couple times lol.
did you put mirrors on both walls?
Besides the bathroom mirror I make do with a handheld that's double sided. One side is magnifying for close ups.
A 360 / 3 way mirror would be better. Looks like this:
<img alt="" src="https://i.ibb.co/VpMmBxpL/61-XNIC2k-RXL-UF894-1000-QL80.jpg">
If you have two mirrors you can hang one on a door for an adjustable side view.
About once a week. I’m bald though.
What is it, September? Let’s see, last one was…. February.
I retired in January. lol
I trim my beard about once a month.
I haven’t had a haircut in about a decade.
I go with a ponytail, and haven’t had even a trim in 2 years.
If I had my preference I’d go in about once every few months to have more vivid hair dye applied, and get a trim then.
like every couple of years, but I’m thinking about moving to yearly
Every six weeks. Don’t trim the beard though. Business up top… zz top down low
I cut my own hair every weekend. I’m in the military, though (and no, I don’t just shave it). I found that I do it more to my liking (and consistently) than the barbers I’ve gone to, it only takes 20 minutes, I don’t have to pay $30, and I can shower immediately after. I use a 6 (3/4 inch) on top, a 3 (3/8 inch) around the curve transitioning to the sides, and then fade down from there, 2 to 1.5 to 1 and finally .5 (1/16 inch) around my ears, side-burns, and most of the back. Keeps everything clean, I always look good, and I spend about $40 every year or two.
Our male apprentices, especially when they are eager to “score,” have a haircut 2-3 times a month.
Then again, they also take their cars to the big car wash every single week, and meticulously vacuum the interior afterwards.
Whenever my wife complains I look homeless and is willing to spend 20 minutes cutting it for me.
Which is roughly every 2-3 months I think. It’d be less often if I didn’t have a wife and had to pay someone to do it, that shit gets expensive.
Depends on the style I’m going for, when my depression isn’t an issue anyway.
In recent years, every month or every 2-3 weeks if I want to appear more groomed. I’ll be getting another mohawk (I used to be a fan of them) this year, which would require shaving the sides every two days.
I would only cut my hair once a month or later if not for the neck hair. I get a cut once that shit becomes too long.
As a woman I get my hair cut every 8 weeks.
I shaved my head every day or so
Buzz it down with no-guard clippers twice a week. Sometimes shave it complely, but not often. Trim the beard when it gets itchy.
I cut my hair when it bothers me. I don’t keep track of the interval.
When I was doing sales, every 2 weeks. Now that I don’t ever see a client, I buzz cut once a year. Might go 2 years this time so I can be a proper Gandalf for Halloween.
Almost never. I had long hair in high school and chopped it senior year due to this thing I was doing yearbook picture wise. Took years for it to grow out and this is where I made the big mistake. For versatility I went with a mullet because of I could throw a pony tail into my collard shirt and look all conformy. As I aged my hair grew slower and slower and it never grew all that fast to begin with. At this point my wife will clean me up before an inteview or such but otherwise I don't get it cut.
Once a month.
It’s actually become a bit of a self-care routine because I go to a Turkish barbers who’ll also do ear hair burning off (nowhere near as intense as you’re imagining), noise hair waxing, and a hot towel cut-throat shave.
I actually like the sensations from them all and I walk out feeling clean and fresh, gives me a monthly little boost of confidence.
I buzz my head about once a month, otherwise I start to look bald.
Every 1 or 2 weeks. I buzz the whole thing with #1 guard on the clippers.
Around 2004 for my last hairdresser haircut, and about twice a year I take a hand span off the end myself. I have my hair long and I eat a lot of protein so it grows quickly.
Beard on the other hand is weekly or thereabouts.
used to go once a month or so, but then covid lockdowns happened and the barber I liked actually complied with the regulations (which is a good thing), which made it more inconvenient than I though it was worth to get a haircut. At first I figured I’d go back once things started returning to normal, but then that took a while and I never did. So, I haven’t gotten an actual haircut in almost six years.
I did start getting the ends cleaned up every six months or so about a year ago though.
No
I let it all grow in winter for warmth. Once it starts to warm up I start shaving my head twice a week. When the heat of summer arrives I shave my beard off and it gets added to the bi-weekly shaving.
My husband has straight hair he keeps in a tight fade, like nearly bald on the sides to very short at the top, and gets his hair cut every 2 weeks. I (lady, curly hair) can go a year between, just get it cut in short layers and let them grow out to long layers. The two of my kids who like theirs short but not crazy short go a month or two between.
Basically the shorter it is, the more you have to cut it - hair grows, on average 1/2 inch (13mm) per month, so mine has a 6 inch tolerance (it doesn’t really look like 6 inches of vertical growth since it isn’t straight) but my husband, with such straight and short hair, has a quarter inch tolerance.
Quarterly
I shave it off once it starts looking like shit
so constantly?
/s
dam son
I shave my head 2-3 times a week.
3 to 4 months. From short to thick helmet style and it starts getting annoying to style and it starts generating too much heat inside to survive.
Not often enough. It looks pretty ratty by the time I force myself to go. Maybe 4-6 months?
I’ve always been annoyed by haircuts so it’s difficult to motivate myself to go. However by the time I settle on a new location to regularly use, they close down. Then it’s that much more annoying o find a new place I don’t hate
I do trim my beard weekly though. Since I have the tools and know how to use them. Currently I have a full beard but cut very short, and shave my neck - shaving a straight line is tough to do
Annoyed by haircuts? Interesting. And the places you like often close? I’m very curious about this because I just go to super cuts or whatever but corporate chain and it’s always super relaxing to me. I get to tell them to do the same thing they always have done (since it’s saved in my profile based on phone number), then just sit, relax and close my eyes for like 15 minutes while someone cuts my hair for me and then leave looking better than when I arrived.
Certainly some of it is on me: I don’t like to plan ahead enough for an appointment but also don’t want to wait. I prefer a place that does walk-ins and I learn when they’re unlikely to have a line.
Supercuts is a great example. My town had two of them so I went to each several times before learning that one was consistently better, so I started going there regularly. Then they closed. So now I’m going to the other but they’re a mess: employees consistently do noticeably worse job and are not attentive to incoming customers. I don’t think I set a high bar but they’re not achieving it. And specifically they insist on giving me a combover even when I say no: I know my hair is thinning but it’s past the point where a combover is anything but sad. I also don’t comb my hair to the side so a combover just looks uneven and sad. Why can’t they just accept when I say no?
My town has been going through a generational and demographic shift so all the old places are being replaced with shiny new ones. While I’m sure those new ones will do a basic haircut, they put so much effort into being shiny and modern with modern hairstyles for young adults or hairstyles traditionally associated with various demographics. Great but why can’t we keep it simple? Why can’t I walk in, ask for a haircut, give my preferences And just get it done?
For both men and women, the type of hair style matters. Long flowing can go 6 months between cuts. The shorter the cut and the more detail the more often it needs to be cut. 6 weeks is often the case for short cuts. If shaved parts, every week might be necessary. In warm weather more often than in cold weather.
2-3 weeks? By 5 weeks I look a little scraggly (I’m balding, so it’s not great to let it go too long, unless I’m dressing as a mad scientist for something)
I’m a long hair but I still go once a month or so to get a trim.
3-6 months, just self cut for the first time. Longer hair, don’t know what to call the style. Like a bob with the back 80% heavily layered and the front hair being the longest (a bit past my chin).
Lemmy is not a good source for the average man’s grooming habits
5 weeks is my sweet spot, i wear it short-ish and ‘messy’ (using wax/pomade) and at about 5 weeks it gets a little bit long to spruik up and starts floppi g over and getting long at the back.
I only get my hair cut like 2 to 3 times a year. Basically when it starts getting in my eyes and becoming a nuisance. I rarely trim my facial hair too. Just once it starts becoming annoying to eat messier foods.
for me if it reaches past the top of my ear it becomes super annoying.
Haven’t had a haircut since COVID. Now I just keep it long, I’ll cut off a few inches every few months.
Companies I work for ignore it because I’ve become a valuable greybeard, so I get away with stuff like that
Curly hair, so it often looks shorter than it is. I let it grow until it gets heavy enough to be annoying. 6 months to a year, maybe.
anything more than 4 months is too long. since asians hair grows much faster, reach 3-5inches will start to irritate my skin(have atopic dermatitis)
Every few months, for short cuts, but it would be more if I wanted to keep the shape.
