What's a bad habit you use to have for a long time but finally fixed?

Habit can be something you noticed about yourself or something that people had to keep telling you about yourself that was true.

Oral fixation.

Boy friends loved it, my husband was the first person who encouraged me to go to therapy and address my emotional and anxiety issues.

TheFunkyMonk@lemmy.world on 14 Oct 23:14 next collapse

Not taking care of myself. I’ve felt so much better and more confident (and practically reversed type 2 diabetes) since I’ve maintained a consistent strength training routine and eaten healthier.

lunatique@lemmy.ml on 15 Oct 00:22 collapse

Congratulations! Happy to hear you started maintaining your health.

Biting my nails. I’m not even sure how or when I quit it.

I remember when I was younger and one of my mom’s cousins told me she would buy me anything I wanted if I stopped biting my nails. I think it was around that time I did but I’m not totally sure. I do remember that I didn’t see her often but the next time I saw her, I did stop and she didn’t buy me the LEGO set I asked her for.

I see her every now and then (this is like 15-20 years later) and I’m always tempted to ask her about that old ass LEGO set she never got for me that I really wanted 😂

SacredHeartAttack@lemmy.world on 15 Oct 01:00 next collapse

Came here to say biting my nails. Only took me 4 decades.

Fallofturkey@lemmy.world on 15 Oct 01:32 collapse

I was 35 when I quit. Did it because of work. Hazardous manufacturing.

Spaniard@lemmy.world on 15 Oct 04:30 collapse

I quit at 25 because I had brackets and two years after I no longer had brackets I started again, quit three years ago thanks to my now wife.

At 25 I also stopped smoking and drinking soda and alcohol.

Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world on 15 Oct 04:00 next collapse

Do you even remember the exact set? Depending on rarity, some of them SKYROCKETED in value.

Hey cousin! Remember that $20 lego set you owe me? Yeah. It costs $4,000 now.

NutinButNet@hilariouschaos.com on 15 Oct 04:22 collapse

Of course I do! I was OBSESSED with that set lol. It was a small one too, I wasn’t trying to be too demanding but I was big into collecting the RES-Q series. But I have checked on it a few times since then.

It was about $10 USD and now it’s worth about $50 USD set # 6445 www.brickeconomy.com/…/lego-res-q-emergency-evac

I used to get those little yellow catalogues and I’d sit there and stare at this set for hours on end.

boobs_@lemmy.world on 16 Oct 06:36 collapse

I didn’t bite but I used to tear my nails, sometimes until they bled… and then some. I kicked the habit quite literally overnight after I started painting them. A little over 4 years later, I think I’ve done it once, though I also typically wear extensions now so it’s kinda hard to even if I wanted

Kalcifer@sh.itjust.works on 15 Oct 01:20 next collapse

Idk if it’s fixed, persay, but I’ve finally realized how much me overthinking things was sabotaging my life, so I’m trying to take actions to fix it.

Used to drink 3+ cans of caffeinated soda/day, kicked the habit this year and down to only drinking them when eating out or if I need to stay up for work or sumthin. Pretty nice that regular bottles of caffeine soda can work like an energy drink used to. Still drinking like 2 cans of soda/day but it’s not caffeinated.

lunatique@lemmy.ml on 15 Oct 02:05 next collapse

A good start. Caffine is the most common drug in America besides tobacco. Neither one is classified as one thanks to good ol FDA

naught101@lemmy.world on 15 Oct 03:39 next collapse

Caffeine is not particularly harmful at common doses…

FreedomAdvocate@lemmy.net.au on 15 Oct 09:18 collapse

Caffeine is classified as a drug by the FDA lol. The FDA monitors caffeine levels in products and takes action when the levels are unsafe.

Same with tobacco lol.

lunatique@lemmy.ml on 15 Oct 18:25 collapse

Well they failed because they allow it in unhealthy levels and don’t regulate it like a drug.

garbagebagel@lemmy.world on 15 Oct 04:19 collapse

Nice, same! Switched over to bubbly water first but after my dentist told me too much of that is also not great, I’ve cut down to a couple of sparkling waters a week and a very rare soda once every couple of months.

Blackfeathr@lemmy.world on 15 Oct 01:45 next collapse

Energy drinks, namely Red Bull. Loved the blue and yellow ones. Drank one every morning for years.

Then in May of last year I started getting toothaches. A root canal, eleven fillings, an extraction, and $6,000 later, I stopped drinking energy drinks and cut down drastically on sugary drinks.

lunatique@lemmy.ml on 15 Oct 02:03 collapse

Good move. Red bull will give you wings (make you an angel)

How is it a habit?

Perspectivist@feddit.uk on 15 Oct 08:18 next collapse

It’s way too early to say that I have fixed it yet, but I quit a severe, two decade long porn addiction and a decade long daily weed smoking cold turkey a little over month ago and haven’t looked back. I might go back to occasional weed smoking at some point once I’ve truly tasted what life feels like without but with porn I’m not sure if I can go back without it spiraling out of control again.

Kolanaki@pawb.social on 15 Oct 08:22 next collapse

I’ll have to get back to you when I finally fix one.

fum@lemmy.world on 15 Oct 09:01 next collapse

Smoking. Took a few tries over many years, but got there in the end.

Also reddit. That was easy when API fee came in. Lemmy is becoming a similar habit though…

SlartyBartFast@sh.itjust.works on 15 Oct 09:17 collapse

Smoking is like an old friend that visits every couple years and stays for a month or so, these days

grasshopper_mouse@lemmy.world on 15 Oct 14:20 next collapse

Smoking. I smoked for 13 years before I finally quit after multiple attempts. So glad I did too, because the cost of cigarettes has become insane.

Crackhappy@lemmy.world on 15 Oct 18:51 collapse

I smoked for 30 years, but when I moved to a different state, the day I moved is the day I quit smoking. It worked super well. Haven’t smoked since.

Soktopraegaeawayok@lemmy.world on 15 Oct 19:49 next collapse

I got this one… I had a 15+ year opiate addiction. Things got real sketchy near the end. Im only here by the grace of God. Been clean over 3 years.

I also quit smoking after about 15 years too. I do vape. Also, I practically never masterbate anymore.

WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today on 15 Oct 20:00 next collapse

I used to not wear pants at home. I just could not stand the things, I was like Tarzan.

socsa@piefed.social on 15 Oct 21:26 collapse

I used to suck random dicks in the Walmart bathroom, but now I am under control and only suck random dicks in the Waldorf Astoria bathroom, which is much cleaner.
