Would I sound taller if I gave my height as 6' -4"?

Context: I’m 5’ 8". 5 feet plus 8 inches = 6 feet minus 4 inches.

Edited to add: Yeah in my head this sounded funny but based on the comments it seems to be just a stupid idea. Oh well!

Like you’re speaking aloud an actual equation? If so, then definitely not. You’ll get called on it the first time someone who actually is 6’ is around, and to draw attention to it like that in the first place is going to sound defensive.

Best to just go about life imo, it projects more confidence, and confidence will do way more to make you seem taller than specifying that you’re four inches off from 6’ ever could.

DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca on 05 Oct 09:34 collapse

There’s no requirement for a person to be 6’ to realise OP isn’t near that height. Most people know their own height or at least an approximation. Someone 5’5" will notice this “6’ person” is only 3 inches taller than them and immediately know they’re a liar.

Impound4017@sh.itjust.works on 05 Oct 19:43 collapse

True. I’m 5’ 6” and would absolutely call someone on this lmao

Diddlydee@feddit.uk on 05 Oct 09:04 next collapse

Um… No. You won’t sound taller no matter what words you use, if we can see you. You are 5ft 8in.

Munkisquisher@lemmy.nz on 05 Oct 09:07 next collapse

You need a speaker held high above your head to sound taller

littleomid@feddit.org on 05 Oct 11:17 collapse

If we are going to assume that they also have a mic and everything they say will be played back from the speakers, then we need to factor in the fact that one can still hear them talk through their mouth, and that a foot of height will add about 3ms of delay.

Azzu@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 05 Oct 09:14 next collapse

If you’re doing that, you would sound even taller if you say your height is 10 feet. Maybe you should try that.

But if you’re going there already, why not say you’re 10 yards high? Might as well go big or go to your over-10-yard-high home.

webghost0101@sopuli.xyz on 05 Oct 09:22 next collapse

Would probably work better if you pretend You don’t actually now the numbers but instead compare it something else.

About 10 stacked pumpkins or enough to reach things standing on top of my closet.

You don’t need to lie, just find something that is hard to reference to others but sounds tall.

Go to a store and find any double door fridge with your height. Now you are as tall as a big fridge.

Anyway, i find peoples obsession with Height in romance incredibly strange.

Junkers_Klunker@feddit.dk on 05 Oct 09:26 next collapse

If you go metric you’ll sound even bigger as 172 is bigger than 5.something. But to answer your question, it’ll only work until people meet you as 8”/20 cm is quite the difference and they will notice. Plus you’ll get the added benefit of being untrustworthy because you’ll lie about such a basic and easy verifiable fact.

Telling tall tales about your height? Not a sign of greatness

cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 05 Oct 10:47 next collapse

You would be lying, and I think honesty is more important.

5’8" is above average for a woman where I live. 6’4" is gargantuan. Like unusually tall.

I see your gender identity tag as including they… if you were AMAB, you might be considered short for your birth-assigned gender, but if you truly are AMAB and trying to present as female, being 5’8" would be helpful; being 6’4" would be a hindrance in addition to being a falsehood. (Apologies if I’ve misread the situation.)

Perhaps you missed the minus sign? 5ft + 8 inches is the same as 6ft - 4 inches :)

Fleur_@aussie.zone on 05 Oct 11:39 next collapse

Just use centimetres and never have to worry about it again

Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 05 Oct 13:13 collapse

I suppose I could say I’m 2m -27cm :)

JustARaccoon@lemmy.world on 05 Oct 11:51 next collapse

You’d sound insecure and edgy

Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 05 Oct 13:12 collapse

Perfect, just like my sex life

wildcardology@lemmy.world on 05 Oct 11:56 next collapse

If you’re talking to a blind person, yes. You can even tell them you’re 10ft tall.

I however can tell the difference between 5’8" and 6’4".

Jerb322@lemmy.world on 05 Oct 13:26 collapse

6’ minus 4"…

pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de on 05 Oct 16:58 next collapse

No, but I bet it would get a laugh.

EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com on 06 Oct 06:35 next collapse

Do it like people do with the time: e.g. 8:45 => quarter to 9.

Kolanaki@pawb.social on 06 Oct 06:37 next collapse

Just give your height in centimeters instead.

Azzu@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 06 Oct 13:36 next collapse

Regarding your edit: Own your funniness. Look how many people made jokes of their own because of yours. If you had just said “oh it’s a stupid idea” and disregarded it, none of this would have happened.

Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 06 Oct 13:53 collapse

That’s good advice, thank you. Maybe some day I’ll be less self-conscious enough to take it. :)

RBWells@lemmy.world on 06 Oct 18:04 collapse

Wait, are you a lady? Just say you are 5’10". I’m about your height and guys are always telling me I am at least 5’10".

Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 07 Oct 05:22 collapse

I don’t know if I’d call myself a lady. Woman, sure. Bitch, sometimes. Lady? Hardly. :P
