Does putting clothes in the closet protect them from dust, or is the dust in there too?

Dust is primarily dead skin. So wherever you go. Dust goes there too

meco03211@lemmy.world on 11 Aug 2025 17:18 next collapse

And it can fairly easily carry on the air. So if air flow can get there, so can dust.

BombOmOm@lemmy.world on 11 Aug 2025 17:53 collapse

PSA: Change your HVAC’s air filter if you haven’t yet this quarter.

meco03211@lemmy.world on 11 Aug 2025 21:46 collapse

Is the recommendation really quarterly? I’ve usually done twice a year but might have to step out up.

BombOmOm@lemmy.world on 11 Aug 2025 22:27 next collapse

I have heard both quarterly and twice a year. There really is a ton of ‘it depends’. Mostly, does it look caked on after a quarter? If not, twice a year is fine. Some people’s places are really dusty.

Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world on 11 Aug 2025 23:18 next collapse

Change it daily! BE A CONSUMER!!! SPEND YOUR MONEY PEASANT!!!

…am I doing it? Am I being a rich person now?

BootLoop@sh.itjust.works on 12 Aug 2025 12:07 collapse

Depends on the thickness. The thin ones need to be changed more than the thick ones.

AmidFuror@fedia.io on 11 Aug 2025 18:59 next collapse

The dust is coming from inside the house!

Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world on 11 Aug 2025 23:17 collapse

Inside my body must be very dusty, because I’m dead inside.

dubyakay@lemmy.ca on 12 Aug 2025 02:37 collapse

But are you skin inside?

SolidShake@lemmy.world on 12 Aug 2025 15:02 collapse

My gym coach tells me I’m skinny on the inside.

rumschlumpel@feddit.org on 11 Aug 2025 16:18 next collapse

It gets there too, but not as much. The dust comes from outside the closet, not inside.

JASN_DE@feddit.org on 11 Aug 2025 16:18 next collapse

There will be dust in there too, just not as much as leaving them out.

IWW4@lemmy.zip on 11 Aug 2025 16:18 next collapse

The closet will to a point, but unless the closet is airtight, dust will seep in .

spankmonkey@lemmy.world on 11 Aug 2025 16:44 collapse

Plus opening and closing the closet will let dust in, so the more it is accessed the more dust will get in.

But still far less than outside the closet.

solrize@lemmy.ml on 11 Aug 2025 16:24 next collapse

I don’t know why clothes that have sat around for a long time get funky but I don’t think it’s dust per se. Keeping clothes in a drawer generally keeps dust off of them but they still get funky.

trxxruraxvr@lemmy.world on 11 Aug 2025 16:32 next collapse

but they still get funky.

If they do you might have high humidity. Depending on the climate you live in better ventilation might help.

BombOmOm@lemmy.world on 11 Aug 2025 16:52 next collapse

Dehumidifier in the summer, particularly in basement areas, is a good idea as well. The AC will lower humidity, but depending on your setup may not fully lower it to the right level.

starlinguk@lemmy.world on 11 Aug 2025 18:45 collapse

The dehumidifier will heat up the room, the AC will have to run more, and your electricity bill will be an absolute doozy.

BombOmOm@lemmy.world on 11 Aug 2025 18:48 collapse

Vastly cheaper and healthier than mold.

Never fuck around with water/humidity in your home. Do it right.

three@lemmy.zip on 11 Aug 2025 19:41 collapse

I live in a desert and clothes, linens, etc. still get that funky smell if they’ve been in the closet for a while.

I_Fart_Glitter@lemmy.world on 12 Aug 2025 05:12 collapse

Yeah, it’s residual body oils and laundry soap going rancid. Humans are gross.

fmstrat@lemmy.nowsci.com on 12 Aug 2025 11:31 collapse

Soaps and oils and no airflow. Hang cloths out of the closet the day before you wear (or rewear) them. Hang outside not in direct sunlight works even better.

And to original OP, any dust added that day will shake off.

grasshopper_mouse@lemmy.world on 11 Aug 2025 19:32 next collapse

There’s dust in closets, too. I just bought a 3-pack of zippable plastic dust covers for all the hanging clothes I don’t wear often because they were getting dusty AF.

jerkface@lemmy.ca on 11 Aug 2025 22:37 next collapse

Wait, what is dust doing to my precious clothing? Should I be alarmed? I’m going to be until you tell me otherwise.

Kolanaki@pawb.social on 11 Aug 2025 23:19 collapse

Making them dusty.

jerkface@lemmy.ca on 12 Aug 2025 00:43 collapse

Memento mori.

Etterra@discuss.online on 12 Aug 2025 03:20 next collapse

If you’re worried about dust just get some of that plastic they throw on at the dry cleaners. Or a garment bag.

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today on 12 Aug 2025 04:18 collapse

your skin will accumulate and form all that gray dust on surfaces, combined with dust mites, or other allergen materials.
