Would this extension help folks in the UK with Imgur posts?

Feeling it’s a dumb question because my brain isn’t parsing exactly how this is supposed to work.

…mozilla.org/…/srcrplc-unblock-censored-image/

Anyone in the UK want to give it a spin?

It might work, but I absolutely wouldn’t trust it or give it permissions to domain a browser session.

It’s essentially proxying your requests between yourself and God knows where to bypass Imgur’s GeoIP location blocking to comply with the UK laws.

Just use a well known VPN instead. Much safer. I think Proton and Mullvad both have free tiers for stuff like this, and you’re not sending your traffic to some random person who made this extension and can do whatever with the permissions you’d have to give it.

between yourself and God knows where

Kinda gathered that bit. 🙁 I may install it and try to track exactly how that flow works. Anyway, seems an easy way to bypass the UK’s block without hassling with a VPN.

I’m in Florida. Fire up my VPN to surf porn. But that’s not a thing I want running 24/7, let alone just to browse lemmy.

Why not?

Browsing lemmy is probably fine, but the general internet is a god damn nightmare to browse on a VPN. Can’t load that one reddit search result with what you need. Endless google captchas making you do traffic light after traffic light and won’t let you pass no matter how many you do, on sites you didn’t even know used google. Downloading games from GOG is capped at like 0.5Mbps. And I’ve had plenty of instances of cloudflare blocking VPNs to certain sites.

My VPN is on 100% of the time. The only thing I can confirm is that reddit sometimes blocks my VPN (guess there IP list isn’t quite complete), but in that case I just use a libreddit frontend (should do that anyway).

Are you using a free one? I at least get 500 mbps download through my vpn, usually more.

Dave@lemmy.nz on 25 Nov 18:11 collapse

No it’s a paid VPN, and it starts fast but after the first 500GB or so it slows right down.

I do suspect many of the issues are from activity on the VPN rather than specific VPN blocking, but that doesn’t change the issues.

How do you handle the Google Captchas that never end? That was the worst part for me.

I guess I don’t get them because I’m logged in with my google account?

Cloudflare is more annoying, but I usually just get the checkbox, rarely do I have to select busses/bikes/trafficlights etc.

Dave@lemmy.nz on 25 Nov 18:45 collapse

Ah haha, I actively avoid using google so don’t log in to an account. If you don’t mind me asking, if corporate surveillance isn’t what you’re avoiding, what’s the main reason you’re using a VPN?

remon@ani.social on 25 Nov 18:51 collapse

Primarily for torrenting, secondarily for getting around geo-blocking.

Ah yip, makes sense, thanks!

For the reddit thing: have you heard of libredirect?

Dave@lemmy.nz on 25 Nov 18:04 collapse

I have, thanks. The impossible to complete captchas are the worst for me, so many sites that are basically broken.

Blackfeathr@lemmy.world on 25 Nov 10:59 collapse

Imgur blocks me on Mullvad like 99% of the time. Not sure about Proton, though.
