Not exactly sure how they made it, but this sounds like “generative ambient” to me.

People make music that sounds similar to this using something called a “modular synthesizer” - its basically a big rack of individual synthesizers that each do one thing, and people plug them together to create “patches”. Then, they run a wave generator through them to generate ambient music that doesn’t actually require anyone to “play” anything during the piece.

If you like this, you might also like these:

This is definitely an analog synth progression, but I’d suggest that doesn’t really answer the question of genre. (Or it’s a digital recreation of one,)

Generative ambient music is a bit more polite than “elevator music” - but that has more to do with a lack of lyrics and being more chill than quality.

The other tracks sound a bit synth wave-y to me, too

I think they made all of this with analog instruments. Good call on the tape loops though. That first link sounds reminiscent of much of their other work, which is more straightforward vocal ‘alternative’ sort of stuff. Thanks for the links!

I was just listening to them recently.

According to their bio and tags on Last.fm, “indie electronic”.

I don’t have an answer, but still thanks for sharing this, I might listen to this at work tomorrow. I always like discovering new music and I get tired of my playlists real fast

Regular Broadcast is great, if you like that style of music (something like Stereolab, but more literary?). Microtronics is for sure mind expanding too. My fave is #17 because it’s just sort of insane.

Experimental

Avant garde / experimental / idm

Which are all different ways of saying the same thing.

I would just go with experimental.
