How does ISP or in general Torrenting tracking works?

I have set an Arr stack with qBittorrent utilizing SOCKS5 server set in another country. Am I still under surveillance if I use my local IP address to download .torrent files or use magnet links?

Your ISP will know which sites you visited, even when they cannot specifically say what you downloaded.

Just assume everything you do online is logged at some point.

SOCKS5 proxy runs through VPN. Actual IP on the peer list would be one from another country.Torrent file is fetched through Arr with a local IP. Can ISP prove that I have actually downloaded anything?

BlackJerseyGiant@lemmy.world on 05 Nov 2025 08:14 next collapse

ISP doesn’t care unless they get a DMCA from a copyright holder. They don’t prove or disprove anything, they just kick you off their network if they recieve to many DMCA notices linked to your IP. If your IP is used to download torrent files with no obfuscation, expect DMCAs in your future

As long as you keep using a VPN+SOCKS proxy you have nothing to worry about from your ISP.

Ok, thanks! Now I can sleep stress-less

I think the torrent in the website above is uniquely generated for every person/ download.

On the other hand I’m pretty sure ISPs can recognise the shape of traffic to identify and throttle torrents even when encrypted. pcworld.com/…/can-a-vpn-really-hide-all-of-your-t…

Torrenter tracking is done by media companies using bots to track IP addresses in the peer list. As long as ur real IP doesn’t show up in the peer list u should be good. ISP can track what websites u are accessing but not what u are accessing. And will only remove u if they get DMCA requests from media companies. No assurances but u should be fine. I would personally recommend download magnets over tor and torrent through VPN to obscure Ip.

ISPs aren’t keeping logs on what you go to. They could if a court told them to, but the amount of storage required to keep a tab on ever customer and what they’re visiting is insane. Most companies don’t even attempt this with their own networks because of the storage requirements.

d00ery@lemmy.world on 05 Nov 2025 16:42 next collapse

The argument - that there’s too much data - is a good one, but if that was the case, why would vpn go to the effort of emphasising “no logs policy”. I think ISPs could retain data as it’s likely only very small records (IP, customer ID, timestamp).

SupraMario@lemmy.world on 05 Nov 2025 23:40 collapse

Because VPNs are advertised as anonymous privacy, for people geo blocked or needing to avoid dmcas with torrents. It’s literally not in the best interest of the ISP to keep the logs, because A) Storage requirements and B) dealing with legal issues. Don’t keep it and you don’t have to worry about either of those unless you get a court order and are required to collect the logs.

muntedcrocodile@hilariouschaos.com on 05 Nov 2025 20:53 collapse

Are u a propaganda bot? We have evidence that the CIA keeps logs of every piece of metadata they can that flows through every ISP in the country. You would be stupid to think other countries don’t do the same.

SupraMario@lemmy.world on 05 Nov 2025 23:24 collapse

You do realize how much data that is right? They do not keep everything. It’s not even remotely feasible. This is full on conspiracy bullshit. I worked for an ISP for a few years doing security. They would need a line directly into these ISPs to pull logs. They don’t keep that shit. Stop doing a qanon…chem trails aren’t real.

muntedcrocodile@hilariouschaos.com on 06 Nov 2025 11:08 collapse

Bro u are pushing complete bullshit go loot at the Edward Snowden leaks. Here is a good summary www.youtube.com/watch?v=2P3P5OkGt8Q

SupraMario@lemmy.world on 06 Nov 2025 12:17 collapse

The Snowden leaks did not state this at all. I think you’re getting confused.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRISM

This was the main source of data they collected, which was 90+%…and mainly from google and apple…both of which are not ISPs.

I’ll reiterate this once again…ISPs are not logging every single bit of traffic you do, it’s to much data and really dumb idea. Their lawyers would have a fucking shit fit if they did.

muntedcrocodile@hilariouschaos.com on 06 Nov 2025 13:58 collapse

Did u watch the yt vid specifically about the room in the ISP?

SupraMario@lemmy.world on 06 Nov 2025 23:50 collapse

Yes I watched your YT vid. It doesn’t say anything about an ISP logging traffic. It’s literally pointless to do so, it’s why they get court orders to force ISPs to log traffic. The NSA again, gets 90%+ of their info from companies like apple and google. They don’t need to spy on the traffic when they have backdoors into applications people use daily and upload their lives to tiktok and Facebook.

Am I still under surveillance

Yes.

Cort@lemmy.world on 06 Nov 2025 01:15 collapse

iirc socks isn’t ‘fully secure’ or some shit, vpn would be better.
