Is there an actual picture of Mohamed or painting that we can view? Without pissing off all of Islam?

As far as I understand, making the picture is the pissing off part. So any looking shouldn’t be a problem. I hear charlie hebdo did a good one which you should find online. Try asking chatgpt to create a most likely picture, it is between you and openai.

Shia Islam has a strong tradition of depicting Muhammad in art, this article has plenty of examples (and explains the issue).

Well that was fascinating! Ty for the interesting read.

There are no surviving depictions of Muhammad made during his lifetime. Although there are surviving descriptions of Muhammad’s appearance, these are not detailed enough to create a perfectly accurate image of him. Because of this, no image of Muhammad can be perfectly accurate, meaning that any image that purports to represent him is, in some way or another, deceptive.

That’s quite a contrast with White Jesus.

I think it’s especially funny when White Jesus also has blue eyes

I saw one one time with a tan and highlights in brown hair. It’s pretty crazy.

That’s a very interesting read, thank you.

In Islam, it is believed that creating images of religious figures is the first step toward idolatry. Islam therefore generally discourages the creation of images of religious figures of any kind.

That’s technically false. The prohibition is not on creating images of religious figures, but on creating images of any person.

TheFogan@programming.dev on 30 Nov 19:43 collapse

It’s something I find kind of amusing about Catholicism.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

I mean to me the whole concept of the catholic religion believing this is one of the 10 commandments. Then simultaneously praying in front of crucifixes or Virgin Mary statues etc…

I mean Jesus you could half way go with assuming trinity and considering him god… but it explicitly says “in heaven” and doesn’t give any kind of “except of me”.

Actually something kind of funny to me, it says “in heaven”, “on earth” or “in the waters below earth”. Assuming christian theology… the biggest exception that comes to my mind… is things that are in hell.

Call it a policy for promoting epistemological hygiene. These useful representations are fine for everyday bs (money, food etc), but for the important stuff you really do need to look at it directly.

Most Shiites, Sufis, some Sunnis, and lots of other denominations either don't see it as Haram or see it as a frowned upon act, not entirely forbidden.

If you're talking about not pissing off Sunnis, then that's a bit harder (as usual). Depictions are controversial for the following:

  • (To mitigate another issue): The fear of Idolatry, as lots of Muslims believe that this is one of the reasons ~"Christianity was corrupted and became polytheistic".

  • (Haram) Because the depiction of living things is forbidden by some hadiths. [1]

  • (Frowned upon) Because of the ways such depictions might be stored later on. Some consider it Haram to simply throw away things with the names of one of the prophets or the word "Allah" for fear of it being mistreated (e.g. stepped on or altered) and extend that to the depictions of prophets (This extends the rule to all prophets of Islam, as such lots of children's cartoons use calligraphy or censor out depictions of all prophets). [2]

So yeah, there you go...

[1]:
[2]:

["Once, we are done with papers or magazines with writings of Quranic verses, prayers or Names of Allah, etc., we must not simply throw them or discard them as we would do with any other ordinary stuff; rather we must dispose them off in a respectable manner.

The ideal way of the disposal of such materials off is by shredding them and then trashing them. If that is not possible, then the next best thing to do is to trash them after cutting and slicing them into tiny pieces.

Burning is not recommended as it may be highly risky; especially indoors. If, however, it is extremely safe to so, and, once done under strict supervision, there is no harm in burning them."](https://aboutislam.net/counseling/ask-the-scholar/miscellaneous-ask-the-scholar/how-to-dispose-of-paper-with-allahs-name/)
