Is there an equivalent to sounds that only young people can hear that drives them away—but for old people?

Dubstep? Techno?

SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world on 04 Nov 2025 19:23 collapse

I’m in my 50s, and that’d draw me in.

Have you tried some PowWow Step? www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RUcnImJglw

SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world on 05 Nov 2025 03:35 next collapse

No, that’s new to me. Pretty cool, except maybe the audio engineer could tone down the volume of the screams early on? It gets much better as the track proceeds, but that first bit really killed my ears.

Fuck, I’m getting old.

😀

I’m 50 and went to a live concert of theirs. It was fantastic.

Trans people? Black people? The right for women to vote? Public transportation? Personal accountability?

Hey, now - not all of us old folks turn into assholes, ya know. I’ll give ya it seems like a majority have, but there’s still a decent percentage of chill hippies, Gen-X, and such around that are good folk.

Somebody touching the thermostat

Booooo!

Auli@lemmy.ca on 04 Nov 2025 20:02 next collapse

No. And what’s old in this context? Also the reason young people can hear it is their hearing haven’t degraded or been damaged.

s@piefed.world on 04 Nov 2025 20:25 next collapse

Older people, whose ability to hear higher frequencies is more likely to have degraded, usually hear "Laurel".

Maybe something low-pitched muffled by something high-pitched?

Rap music

PriorityMotif@lemmy.world on 04 Nov 2025 23:05 collapse

Rap music became popular in the late 70s. It’s oldies music.

Zamboni_Driver@lemmy.ca on 05 Nov 2025 00:47 next collapse

Yes, 70s rap, that’s what I meant. That makes sense.

SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world on 05 Nov 2025 05:04 collapse

Yeah, but somewhere around a decade later “Gangsta Rap” became big & I lost all interest in rap from then on - guess that’s your answer, OP. Well… for us crackers, anyway.

Gen Z and Alpha slang.

I_am_10_squirrels@beehaw.org on 05 Nov 2025 15:21 collapse

My niece’s vocabulary consists of “sussy baka” and “bye Felicia”. I’m not sure how “bye Felicia” became modern slang.

The movie Friday.

I_am_10_squirrels@beehaw.org on 06 Nov 2025 18:14 collapse

But it’s from 1995, and the phrase supposedly peaked in popularity 10 years ago. How is it a thing again?

Well, I went to a gig that my son in law played to show support. Turns out his band is made up of three very talented musicians and a lead singer who believes that screamo is his gift to mankind. Would go again if they promise to ship the lead singer to Siberia, the three were great - he was NOT.
