Are you going to need an unlimited data plan to use The 8 Pro's Video Boost feature? (lemmy.ca)

From my understanding, the P8P’s video boost can’t be done in the phone itself, but it’s actually uploading the video to Google’s servers, processing it there, then downloading the finished product back again. In fact, it probably uploads two videos, one at high ISO and one at low ISO to get the full HDR range.

For anyone who wants to take lots of videos, this sounds like it’ll blow through your data caps very quickly.

It probably does it after its backed up via Google photos which can be set to WiFi only.

We’ll have to wait for the first reviews of that feature but this seems to be the most likely way they’re going to go about it.

weew@lemmy.ca on 07 Oct 2023 16:42 collapse

That sucks, because then you won’t be able to see if you need to re-shoot a video until after going home.

AlmightySnoo@lemmy.world on 07 Oct 2023 17:27 collapse

I might be missing something here but nothing prevents your phone from simply storing the unprocessed video locally and wait for a Wi-Fi connection to send it to Google’s servers?

That way you would still be able to keep shooting videos, it’s just that they won’t be processed until you get home.

weew@lemmy.ca on 07 Oct 2023 20:41 collapse

You totally can. I missed the part about the videos taking overnight to process, so there’s apparently no reason to upload them immediately.

It would still suck for people with data caps at home, like rural Americans or people who just use cellular hotspot to serve as home internet

I’ve been confused about this feature. It doesn’t seem to have a whole lotta info on how it works and if it is being uploaded to a server why can’t the pixel 8 have it? On the other hand if it’s processed on the device the 8 and 8 pro have the same chip which leads me to the same question.

AlmightySnoo@lemmy.world on 08 Oct 2023 19:55 collapse

Yup it definitely feels like Google is differentiating between the 8 and 8 pro mainly via software, putting the lenses aside.

Who the hell still has capped data in 2023?

what_was_not_said@lemmy.world on 08 Oct 2023 21:08 next collapse

Anyone in the US or Canada who doesn’t want to pay large sums for service.

random65837@lemmy.world on 08 Oct 2023 21:34 collapse

You can get unlimited for $60 typically from mainstream carriers and for $35-$45 from the prepay and MVNOs. Been like that for many years.

GrindingGears@lemmy.ca on 19 Oct 2023 18:07 collapse

Really, tell me where bro?

In Canada, we have “unlimited” in that we have service like 40 to 50gb, and any data after that is reduced to speeds “up to” 512kb/s. Plot spoiler to no one, those speeds aren’t definitely not 512kb and it’s pretty much unusable at that point.

So no, we don’t have mainstream carriers that offer actual unlimited for under $100. That said, I have 40gb on my plan for $50 CAN/US, and it’s sufficient. Don’t think I’ve even come close to consuming that.

newIdentity@sh.itjust.works on 11 Oct 2023 18:08 collapse

Almost everyone.

In Germany Unlimited is like 70-100€ a month.

Edit: ohh that’s about data caps at home.
